Ashwini opens the sidereal zodiac at 0° Aries, and everything about it is fast. Its deities, the Ashvins, ride ahead of the dawn and arrive in time to rescue and heal, so the nakshatra carries the quality of quick help and first aid: the person who acts while others are still deciding.
With the Moon in Ashwini the mind is restless, eager and youthful. Feelings move quickly and recover quickly. There is a natural instinct for medicine, sport, transport and anything that rewards speed, and a strong dislike of waiting.
Ketu, its lord, gives a detached, intuitive edge: Ashwini often knows what to do without being able to explain why. The traditional lesson is to finish what it so readily starts, and to let others keep pace.
The four padas
Each pada is 3°20′ wide and takes the colour of one navamsa sign.
