Every date on these pages is calculated from astronomical positions, not copied from a table. Use them to plan around the Moon, check when a retrograde begins and ends, or see which sign a planet is moving through.

- New MoonAt the New Moon the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun, so its lit side faces away from us and it disappears from the night sky for a day or two.
- Mercury retrogradeThree or four times a year Mercury seems to stop and move backwards through the zodiac for about three weeks.
- EclipsesEclipses happen when the Sun, Earth and Moon line up closely enough for one to cast a shadow on another.

How these dates are calculated
Positions come from Astronomy Engine, an open-source library based on the same planetary theory used for professional almanacs, and are accurate to well under a minute of time for these events. Signs are the tropical (Western) zodiac unless a page says otherwise. Stations, the moments a planet turns retrograde or direct, are found by checking the planet’s apparent motion minute by minute.
