Full Moon
A Full Moon happens when the Moon stands opposite the Sun, so the whole face we see is lit. It comes roughly every 29.5 days, and astrologers read it as the peak of a monthly cycle.
What happens in the sky
From Earth the Moon and the Sun are 180 degrees apart along the ecliptic, the Sun’s yearly path. The Moon rises around sunset, crosses the sky all night and sets around sunrise. Because it sits opposite the Sun, a Full Moon is always in the zodiac sign opposite the Sun’s sign: when the Sun is in Scorpio the Full Moon is in Taurus, when the Sun is in Capricorn it is in Cancer.
The exact Full Moon is a single moment, the instant of opposition. To the eye the Moon looks full for about a day either side, which is why calendars and apps can disagree by a day depending on the time zone they use. The times on this page are calculated for that exact moment.
A Full Moon close to the Moon’s nearest point to Earth looks slightly larger and brighter and is popularly called a supermoon. When a Full Moon also lines up with the nodes of the Moon’s orbit, Earth’s shadow falls across it and we get a lunar eclipse.
What a Full Moon means in astrology
Astrology treats the lunar month as a cycle that starts at the New Moon and peaks at the Full Moon. The New Moon is the seed; the Full Moon is the moment the plant is fully visible. Themes that were quietly building for two weeks come into the open, and what was hidden tends to show.
Because the Sun and Moon face each other from opposite signs, a Full Moon is read as a tension between two sides of life: the Sun’s sign shows what you are consciously working on, the Moon’s sign what you feel and need. A Full Moon in Aries with the Sun in Libra, for example, pulls between your own needs and your relationships. Traditionally it asks for balance between the two rather than a winner.
The days after a Full Moon belong to the waning half of the cycle, traditionally a time for finishing, releasing and taking stock rather than starting something new.
How people use it
Many people use the Full Moon as a monthly check-in: what has come to fruition since the last New Moon, and what is ready to be let go. Journaling, clearing out a space or ending something that has run its course are common rituals.
If you have your birth chart, look at which house the Full Moon falls in. That area of life is where the peak is traditionally felt. Kapparo shows the houses of your own chart when you enter your birth time and place.
